On The Scene Report With Paul Dean

Loverboy Fan Club News (Summer/Fall 1985)

The Lovin' Every Minute of It video was shot at the Holiday Inn in Hollywood, California, the August 24th weekend. Paul gives us a full report. . .

"We took over the entire third floor of the Holiday Inn. It was really great to do that. We had the sets, offices, dressing rooms. . .And we set up a huge dining room on the second floor, so we really moved in. There were at least 100 of us."

"Jerry Kramer, the guy who did California Girls and Just a Gigolo for David Lee Roth and the You Look Mahvelous video was producer and co-director. He also manages Tommy Shaw, by the way. The other director was Rick Rosenthal who did Bad Boys with Sean Penn."

"The shoot took three 14-hour minimum days with the lighting crews working at least 16 hours a day, But of course the band only actually worked three or four hours total. The rest of the time we were just sitting around doing exercises and chatting up the Hollywood starlets. They were nice. A lot of them had just done the George Burns Special. . . A few were Playboy Bunnies!"

"My guitar room was the first set to get built so we did my scene first. I hadn't been on camera or done anything public for two years and there I was with four strange girls. It took a while to get loosened up."

"The set was from a real guitar place on Sunset Boulevard. They just packed it all up and moved it into the Holiday Inn. I learned quite a lot from the guy who had the shop on how to set up my guitar. He's been making guitars and doing repairs for 25 years at least."

"The guitar room was my idea and the poker game was Scott's. Everyone had input--everything was pretty well in character except Matt might have been having a party of his own, although smaller than Mike's. Matt likes to party!"

"Does anyone recognize the waitress in Mike's party scene? She'll deny it cuz she's under contract to a studio and isn't offiicially supposed to do anything else, but it's Jennilee Harris from Dallas and Three's Company. Don't tell anybody! She met Mike at a celebrity tennis thing in the summer. She said then that she'd like to be in our next video and Mike just laughed. But sure enough, she showed up on the set!"

"To do the window to window shots, they had a ladder truck with a huge crane--it was like serious movie making--run back and forth outside the rooms from the parking lot. A crowd was standing outside watching--we joked around with them alot, trading insults through the window and fun stuff like that."

"We shot the live footage last at Club Lingerie in Hollywood and spent some extra time to shoot enough for a live video as well. We had to be out by 9:00 for the real band to set up."

"It was 90 above outside. 110 inside and we had fifty 1000 watt lamps shining on us so it was about 130 on stage."

"Weren't 'The Hollywood Hillbillies' the band in the video, a riot? I just about fell off my chair when I saw that sax player do that dance thing. And under that black wig, the lead singer had her head practically shaved and her hair dyed orange and green. She makes Cyndi Lauper look like my grandmother!"

"We all had a great time. We're going to get Jerry Kramer again when we do our next video--which will be of Dangerous--and we'll give you a report on that, too. Bye for now!!"
