I was fortunate enough to see Loverboy, my all-time favorite, on 8-22-02 in Cleveland. It was a triple-bill with Eddie Money & Survivor. Survivor went first, then Loverboy, and Eddie Money closed the show and had the longest set. Judging by the crowd reaction, people were definitely there for LOVERBOY and the guys were very well-received by the Cleveland fans. It had been just over 2 years since their last Cleveland appearance, which took place on 7-3-00. I hope the band was able to tell just how much they'd been missed during that time!!
The show took place at an outdoor venue located on the banks of the Cuyahoga River almost within sight of Lake Erie. The river and the night-time Cleveland skyline made for a spectacular backdrop behind the stage during the show. Luckily, the venue had a pavilion-type roof covering it because we found out later that it rained quite hard during Loverboy's set!! Getting soaked would have been less then ideal, but nothing could have stopped the fans' enthusiasm that night!
Our seats were 5th row center, right next to a couple who described their experience of camping out overnight in 1983 to get Loverboy tickets. Last summer at the Berrien Springs, MI, show, we sat next to someone who shared a similar experience with us. I really hope the band realizes what wonderful memories have been created for so many people.
Loverboy's set was abbreviated a little bit due to being one of 3 bands performing that night - we still brought them back out for an encore though! I got to hear most of my older favorites, with 'When It's Over' being the most notable omission this time. I'd heard them do 'Heaven In Your Eyes' at the Cuyahoga Falls show this past May when they had more time and a longer show. I'd hoped to hear 'Heaven' again at the Cleveland show, but it wasn't included this time. Of course, there's always next time!!
As always, the guys sounded great and truly seemed to appreciate the fans they have. It was a night that I won't forget!
